As good as these modified Otto Link pieces are - we now have a BETTER ALTERNATIVE:

Why would someone want to modify a BRAND NEW Otto Link mouthpiece? Many players are paying a premium price in the used marketplace for the older vintage design models (typically $500 to well over $1000 depending on condition) because, for them, the vintage piece plays and sounds that much better than the newer model. A side-by-side comparison of the vintage and newer models shows that the body, window, chamber, rails, tip, and baffle are all substantially different from the earlier design which was manufactured in the Florida and New York facilities. The Warburton Modified Otto Link model cost is a fraction of what you'll spend on a worn vintage piece AND it's brand new with the facing size you want!

What we do (starting with a new modern STM-NY or new "Vintage" NY series):

  • reduce thickness of the body
  • widen and lengthen the window
  • taper and narrow the side rails
  • widen the area at the inside of the tip
  • reshape the chamber floor and baffle profile
  • reduce the table thickness significantly
  • chamfer the inner side rails
  • reface the mouthpiece
  • apply silver (or optional gold) plating
Results of the work:
  • more resonant sound and feel
  • more harmonics in the sound
  • more free blowing and better projection without added brightness
  • give the sound breadth and freedom
  • create a complex and full sound
  • improve the angle of the baffle/reed relationship
  • create the properly shaped round chamber
  • make the piece as efficient and reed friendly as possible
  • a beautiful and long lasting finish

The "Vintage" Series Tone Master produces a darker sound but otherwise
has all the same work performed as the "STM-NY".

"Man, that is a smokin mpc!  Thanks Eric.  You made a worthless old mouthpiece one of my favorites!  I gotta start playing tenor more!"

Our modified model starts out as a new model STM-NY (this one was purchased from a retailer in July 2010): It came with an OK, but not fantastic, gold-plating job and had the annoying facing problems we'd expect to find in most "mass-production" sax mouthpieces

Original New Otto Link Mouthpiece

2010 retail model vs the 1960's vintage design - they're two completely different pieces! The most important differences which cause the newer one (top of photo) to play differently in comparison to the 1960's design (bottom of photo) are the window length and width, tip and rail geometry, and chamber shape. Play testing these two pieces side-by-side would be a huge disappointment if you just purchased the newer model from a retailer and you were looking for that vintage sound and feel.

This is the modern 2010 model AFTER our modifications are completed:

Note that we do not use any filler materials to reshape the piece - we alter and reshape the existing
metal to provide a permanent solution that maintains all the resonant qualities of the solid metal piece.

Rails, baffle, and tip are modified to closely resemble the early model.
The window has been altered accordingly as well

The chamber has been opened up and modified similar to the early vintage design.
